Gaskets: What Are They and What Do They Do?

At Puente Hills Ford, we like to keep our consumers well-informed about how they can maintain the condition of their vehicles. Gaskets are important because they bind at least two surfaces together to prevent gases and fluids from leaking.

There are many types of gaskets, which include head gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, and bearing gaskets. It is important to understand warning signs that can let you know one of your gaskets needs to be changed. If you notice bubbling, foaming, or gurgling coming from under the radiator, there could be a hole in one of the gaskets. In addition, if you notice a substance that resembles mayonnaise when you are checking the oil level, then it could be that a gasket is failing.

The best way to prevent gasket failure is to check the coolant temperatures and oil levels on a routine basis. Keeping them at the recommended levels will help extend the life of your gaskets, and you should also use a manufacturer-recommended coolant and oil.
