Classic Ford Bronco: The First Generation (1965–1977)
What did the first Ford Bronco include? Was it always meant to be an off-road vehicle? Find out about the Bronco’s early years and enjoy sharing these tidbits with your friends and family:
- The original classic Ford Bronco was designed as a passenger-friendly off-roader with a chassis unique to it alone.
- Early Ford Bronco engines were 105-hp inline-6 models inspired by the Ford Falcon engine.
- While the classic Ford Bronco was not created to be “flashy” or “luxurious,” its practical design and outdoor-friendly features made it a vehicle superstar immediately!
- Today’s Ford Bronco is classified as a compact SUV due to its 92-inch wheelbase. Four-wheel drive models were the initial standard.
Classic Ford Bronco: The Second Generation and Beyond
So how did the early Ford Bronco evolve and continue to satisfy drivers in Upland, West Covina, and everywhere else? Let’s learn about the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth generation models:
- Second Generation (1978-1980): The second incarnation of the Ford Bronco said goodbye to its original chassis and hello to one extremely similar to the Ford F-Series chassis. It also featured a 12-inch wheelbase extension and was sold as a three-door wagon exclusively.
- Third Generation (1980-1986): A smaller, lighter version of the classic Ford Bronco, the third generation wagon was otherwise the same as previous models.
- Ford Bronco II (1983-1990): This Ford Bronco marked the beginning of a new compact SUV line. It was developed in conjunction with the 1983 Ford Ranger and featured a Ranger configuration engine. Eventually, the Ford Bronco II was replaced by the Ford Explorer.
- Fourth Generation: (1987-1991): Featuring the same chassis as the third generation model, the fourth generation Ford Bronco included the Silver Anniversary Edition in its lineup. It was subsequently the first Bronco with premium leather seating.
- Fifth Generation: (1992-1996): Interior and safety feature updates were the most notable changes in the fifth generation Ford Bronco. These models were also manufactured without the famous removable hard top.
- Sixth Generation: (2021- ): A mid-size SUV model, the sixth generation Ford Bronco includes independent suspension, timeless body-on-frame construction, and a 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost® inline-four engine. It shares a removable roof with the classic Ford Bronco, as well as detachable side doors.
