Does Car AC Use Gas?

2022 Ford Bronco Dashboard

If you have ever wondered whether your vehicle’s air conditioning system uses gas, you are hardly alone! Many drivers throughout Chino Hills, the surrounding areas, and the rest of the country also ask, “Does a car AC use gas?”. The answer is yes. Your car AC uses fuel when it’s cooling your vehicle interior, assuming you operate a gas-powered car, truck, or SUV. This is because the alternator, which draws energy from the fuel-using engine, powers the air conditioning system.

Learning that your car’s air conditioning system uses gas to maintain a comfortable cabin temperature does not mean forgoing AC usage in the future! It is possible to enjoy a cool vehicle interior without using an excessive amount of gas. Learn more about car AC systems and how to maintain efficiency on hot summer days with Puente Hills Ford. Our service department is here whenever your vehicle’s AC needs maintenance!

How Does a Car AC System Work?

Vehicle air conditioning systems do not vary much by make or model and feature several of the same components as their household counterparts. AC system parts include:

  • Compressor — compresses the refrigerant, or freon, into a fluid. This fluid flows down a line to the condenser unit.
  • Condenser — removes heat from the refrigerant and sends the liquid to the expansion valve or orifice tube.
  • Expansion valve or orifice tube — changes the refrigerant from liquid to gas before transferring it to the receiver/drier or accumulator.
  • Receiver/drier or accumulator —eliminates refrigerant moisture, then sends it to the evaporator.
  • Evaporator — extracts heat from the air passing through its core. That air is sent to the refrigerant, which turns it into cold air flowing into the cabin.

Tips For Improving Vehicle Efficiency With the AC On

You do not have to suffer in the heat while driving in Upland and the surrounding communities! There are several ways to maintain fuel efficiency, even on the hottest days of the year. We suggest putting the following tips into practice, all of which prevent your engine from working overtime:

  • Brake gradually
  • Lower your speed and drive in a higher gear
  • Refrain from overloading your vehicle
  • Ensure the tires are properly inflated and aligned
  • Do not idle for over 30 seconds
  • Use sun reflectors whenever you park in the sun
  • Purchase the recommended oil for your car
